Lesson 1 of 3
Understanding individual needs
Autistic and disabled learners have varied strengths, preferences and support needs. A diagnosis does not tell you how every person learns. Ask the learner what helps and respect their preferred language.
Barriers can come from noisy environments, unclear instructions, inaccessible materials or inflexible schedules. Inclusion changes environments and practices rather than expecting everyone to learn the same way.
Put it into practice
Identify three barriers in a classroom and a possible adjustment for each.
Key takeaway
Ask, listen and avoid stereotypes.
